Tao Li qualifies for 100m butterfly final

SINGAPORE'S swimmer Tao Li on Sunday became the first Singaporean to qualify for an Olympic finals.

Finishing third in her heats, she clocked 57.54 sec in the women's 100m butterfly.

Her time is a new Asian and national record. She is also the fourth fastest qualifier.

Australia's Lisbeth Trickett is the fastest with a time 57.05 sec and American Christine Magnuson came in second, clocking 57.08 sec, reported The Straits Times.

The third fastest qualifier is Jessicah Schipper from Australia with a time of 57.43 sec.

The women's 100m butterfly finals will be held on Monday morning.

Others in the medal hunt

Another Singapore Olympian with a chance of a medal is shooter Lee Wung Yew.

Ranked 17th in a field of 35 in the trap shooting competition, Lee needs to move up 11 places to stay in the hunt for an Olympic medal.

Meanwhile, Li Yujia and Jiang Yanmei, badminton women's doubles pair, have also won their opening match.

They beat Americans Eva Lee and Mesinee Mangkalakiri 21-12, 21-12.

The Singaporeans will next play South Korea's world No 4 pair, Lee Hyo Jung and Lee Kyung Won, for a place in the semi-finals. They have yet to beat the Korean pair.

Shooter out of content

However, in trap shooting, Lee Wung Yew is out of medal contention after failing to make it to the top six in the second round of qualifying.
