THERE will be an abundance of cheer across Singapore to usher in the New Year, from the Prime Minister's crooning to celebrity appearances, magic shows, carnivals and fireworks.

A total of 27 countdown parties have been organised in the heartlands by grassroots organisations.

A definite highlight is the party that will take place at the open field opposite Khatib MRT station. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is slated to join artistes on stage for the midnight countdown. He will then lead in the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

There will be performances by Taiwan's Will Liu Geng Hong, local veteran Qing Huai and Malaysian singer Wu Jia Hui too.

Over at the Kallang Community Club, there will be a fire show by magician and fire-eater Bosco Francis, named Best Actor at the fourth Asian Festival of First Films for his role as a magician in Eric Khoo's movie, My Magic.

The event will also feature a hip-hop dance performance and an Elvis Presley impersonator.

A foam party and midnight fireworks will be star attractions along Boon Lay Place, where celebrations will begin with a school-band performance. Hosted by Mark Lee, there will be appearances by MediaCorp artistes like Apple Hong and Joanne Peh, and Singapore Idol winner Hady Mirza.

At Kopitiam City (Block 275D, Compassvale Link), Channel U's SuperBand finalist Juz B will give an a cappella performance.

A circus-themed carnival, with clowns and stilt walkers, will thrill the young ones.

That's just four sites - drop in on the other 23! Check with your local grassroots organisations for details of celebrations in your neighbourhood.
