ME AND MY FLAG: Mr Nick Pan (left)and Mr Victor Tan.

SHOW your love for Singapore this National Day in a tech-savvy and alternative way by "flying" a digital version of the national flag on your Facebook or Twitter profile picture.

The digital flag icon or what netizens often refer to as a twibbon was made available for free last month on Facebook and Twitter.

The duo behind the project, Mr Nick Pan, 35, and Mr Victor Tan, 29, are hoping to drum up support for a campaign they have dubbed NDP 2010 Fly Our Digital Flag, inspired by this year's official National Day theme: "Live our dreams, fly our flag".

Mr Pan, a projects director in an Internet consultancy firm, hopes that the digital element will appeal to younger Singaporeans.

He said: "Anyone with an online presence, such as those who own an online blog or an account on Facebook or Twitter, and who is Singaporean, should fly the Singapore flag proudly." Mr Pan, who created the digital flag, first posted it on his blog in 2001 while studying in Australia.

His friend, Mr Tan, liked the idea and decided to follow suit - posting it on his own blog five years ago.

They are offering the digital flag to all Singaporeans and Facebook and Twitter users, here and abroad, through the twibbon website.

A link to the website is provided on their official Facebook page, titled "Live Our Dreams, Fly Our Digital Flag".

Once the application is added, Facebook and Twitter users can "fly" the twibbon.

So far, about 1,360 people have adopted the twibbon, but the duo are hoping to hit their target of 5,000 by National Day.
