JAKARTA - A HIGH school teacher in Indonesia stabbed a 13-year-old student to death in a frenzied attack, police and reports said on Tuesday.
'The teacher, (identified only as) TR, suddenly stabbed Rian seven times outside a classroom at Bojong Lompang High School,' policeman Zaeni said from a police post in West Java.
Mr Zaeni said the boy, Rian Herdiyana, died of his wounds at a hospital in the town of Sukabumi later on Tuesday.
'The cause of the attack is unknown,' Mr Zaeni said, adding that police had launched an investigation, while the teacher was under treatment in the same hospital after being mobbed by villagers as he was taken away.
Police were guarding the teacher's house from angry villagers who had pelted it with stones, he said.
Local news website Detikcom reported the high school's principal as saying the sports teacher had appeared depressed over the previous few days.
The wesbite also quoted a student witness who said the teacher attacked suddenly as a group of students waited to be called in for a meeting.
The report said the attack was stopped when a cleaner struck the teacher's hand with a bamboo stick, knocking his knife to the ground. -- AFP
