FOR 12-year-old Tan Shee Yin - an avid painter since kindergarten - enrolling in the new School of the Arts (Sota) was never an issue.
With a Primary School Leaving Examination score of 271, she could have had her pick of any top school.
But her choice was clear.
So, when Sota opens its doors next month, Shee Yin, who wants to be an artist or a teacher, will join the school's visual arts section.
On Thursday, together with 238 other students, she will report at the school's interim campus in Goodman Road, Mountbatten, to buy uniforms and textbooks.
Shee Yin wants to improve her technique by learning from her peers and teachers at the arts school. She has also been taking lessons at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
Said the former Da Qiao Primary pupil: 'I like to express my mood through art, using colours. When I'm happy I use bright colours. When I'm sad I use dull colours.'
Of her excellent PSLE results, she said: 'I don't think results make a difference in the arts school. Art depends on your talent and not your academic results.'
She is among the first batch of students - ranging from a latin ballroom dancer to a harpist - chosen from more than 1,000 who went for five rounds of auditions.
Those selected came from more than 100 different primary schools. There are 139 of them in Secondary 1 and 100 students in Secondary 2.
