Daily Xpress, ANN

THAILAND - A lecturer at Ubon Ratchathani University who is facing molestation charges gave himself up to police yesterday.

Asst Prof Chakkrit Utharo, 41, has already met with police over the allegation, but has refused to speak to the press. He used his position to secure bail in this case.

Earlier this week, a third-year student lodged a complaint with police that Chakkrit sexually harassed her while promising to give her a good grade.

Warin Chamrap Police Station superintendent Lt-Colonel Pratya Kongsakul said the plaintiff and her friend had given consistent testimonies. "With a video clip recording what happened, we already have solid evidence to prosecute the lecturer."

University president Prakob Wirojanagud said Chakkrit's case had damaged the university's reputation. "We will adopt more stringent measures in reviewing the qualifications of applicants," Prakob said. "Also, I am going to instruct all lecturers not to meet any students one on one," Prakob said.

He praised the student who filed the complaint against Chakkrit, calling her a defender of women's rights.
