>KANGAR, MALAYSIA - A secondary school here is in the news again barely a week after a female teacher there was kicked by a student. Two groups of students were involved in a brawl at SM Perlis over a misunderstanding at 11am yesterday. Police were called in to control the brawl, which involved between 15 and 20 students.
A source said the fight occurred when a group of students attacked another group for allegedly damaging some bicycles parked at the school's bicycle shed.
The source said the students started fighting at the bicycle shed and the brawl continued to the school canteen. This prompted teachers to call the police.
A few police patrol cars were seen in the school compound. Personnel from the state police Criminal Investigation Department were also seen entering the school.
Some parents rushed to the school after receiving word of the incident.
However, the school authorities made an announcement on the public address system asking parents to leave the school compound, ostensibly to allow police to question the students.
Several male students were seen seated in a row near a classroom. They were believed to be waiting for their turn to be questioned by police.
A few of them had torn shirts. Sources said some students were bloodied after receiving punches.
Later, a police van with several students was seen leaving via the back gate.
District police chief Superintendent Yusof Mohd Diah confirmed that a misunderstanding had caused the fight, but refused to elaborate pending investigations.
He also refused to reveal the number of students brought in to the police headquarters for questioning.
"Several students have been called in to have their statements recorded and to help us understand the situation.
"It was a small fight which occurred because some bicycles were damaged. One group was unhappy and a fight ensued."
Yesterday's brawl occurred only four days after a Form Two girl at the same school kicked her physics teacher's belly in class.
State Education Department director Mansor Lat said yesterday a special meeting would be held to address the indiscipline at the school.
