LOW Chee Kwang, medical director and senior orthopaedic surgeon at United Orthopaedic Specialists, is the first doctor here who used Ilizarov's method to help separate the fingers of an adult's left hand mangled in an accident. His first book is a culmination of his extensive experience in treating various orthopaedic conditions in adults and children.

Dr Low believes strongly that prevention is better than cure, so he has specially highlighted different preventive measures for each orthopaedic condition in his book. The causes, clinical presentation and treatment options for each condition are also included, and accompanied by illustrations for clear understanding. The book, published by Singapore Press Holdings, is available at major bookstores.

EYE specialist Julian Theng, medical director of the Eagle Eye Centre, first published this book in English two years ago, and it is now followed up by a Mandarin version.

'I believe that better eye-care and health care is a combination of having the right technology and the right education,' says Dr Theng. 'While it's important for the medical profession and industry to provide patients with the latest technology like lenses, we also have to provide knowledge about eye-care to the public.'

The book relates his experience in treating presbyopia and other eye ailments, and provides patients with knowledge of how to look after their eyes.

FIFTY-SIX public and private sector doctors from different generations and diverse backgrounds penned their personal journeys, reflections and defining moments for this book, compiled and published by Singhealth.

It's a timely look at what doctors themselves experience in practice. Timely because recent controversial events including sex scandals and charges of profiteering have shaken the medical fraternity and cast a shadow over the profession, which is traditionally well regarded by people.

Contributing doctors include oncologist Ang Peng Tiam and urologist Christopher Cheng. The book is divided into sections such as At The Heart, Journeys (which seems primarily tailored to aspiring medical students), Defining Moments, Light on to the Path (on the people who influenced these doctors) and Reflections.
