Hot on the heels of the Anglo Chinese Junior College (ACJC) birthday hazing incident, more shocking videos of junior college (JC) students being violently ragged have surfaced on the Internet.
This time, the students in the spotlight are the rugby boys from St. Andrew's Junior College (SAJC).
A video submitted to STOMP showed the students throwing the SAJC birthday boy into a bin, rubbing his genitals with toothpaste and then slamming his private parts into a pole.
According to the online citizen journalism site, the clip had been uploaded onto a popular online video channel in April this year. The video clip also links to other similar videos of birthday kids being ragged in SAJC.
Such forms of ragging - a British slang for the act of playing a rough practical joke - are a common practice in most JCs among the male students.
"We saw it happen once in awhile, but always with boys, and nobody got seriously hurt," shared an alumnus of a top JC located in the northern part of Singapore who declined to be named.
"No one batted an eyelid because we all thought it was boys being boys.
"Just male testosterone acting up in acts of brainless 'fun'," continued the current postgraduate student who graduated from his JC seven years ago.
'I won't go JC'
Despite the insistence by the students of both ACJC and SAJC by that both birthday hazing incidents had been done in the name of fun, the release of the videos into the public eye has sparked off a hot debate in the online forums.
Many netizens are now questioning if studying in a polytechnic is, perhaps, better than going to a JC, as there have been no similar reports about ragging incidents in the former.
"Seems like JC don't seem to be the best choice for my kid," commented netizen MoneyNotEnough.
Echoed sunstone: "That's so scary! I won't go JC. I'm going poly."
However, other netizens begged to differ.
"I must say that such stuff is not only unique to JC students. I have heard of secondary school and poly students doing the same.
"So please don't judge the JC students merely on the two ragging incidents. It's not fair to the rest of the population," protested deprecative.
"This bdae celebrations are so common in JC, and please, why the uproar? Its not bullying, both 'victims' were laughing!", pointed out Isotrexin.
"JC is really the place to be. The bonding, the friends, hell, I'm glad I'm in JC," he added.
Too late for regret
A reader emailed AsiaOne to share that, though fun, there are sometimes unforeseen consequences to these raggings.
"I recall this incident where a ragging involved applying toothpaste onto the victim's face.
"Unfortunately, the victim was allergic to toothpaste and there was scarring on the his face. No one knew about his allergy until after the ragging.
"So this is a good example of how no matter how much precaution is taken sometimes, things go wrong and it will be too late for regret," he added.
