Applications for optometry degree snapped up

In less than eight days after its launch, applications for Singapore's first full-time optometry degree had already exceeded the limited places allocated for the course.

A total of 64 - and still counting - applications had been received for the 60 spaces available.

The degree, a marriage between Singapore Polytechnic, The University of Manchester and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, will also include hands-on experience at an acute hospital - a first for a Polytechnic-Foreign Specialised Institution (Poly-FSI) degree.

Students can look forward to graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Optometry.

With Singapore's reputation as the myopic capital of the world, the introduction of this degree will come as a relief as it will increase the number of primary eyecare practitioners in the country.

Previously, aspiring optometrists from Singapore had to obtain their qualifications from overseas varsities in Australia or the UK for their undergraduate studies after obtaining a diploma from Singapore Polytechnic.

Now, diploma graduates can look forward to being taught and accredited by a world-class university - at a subsidised fee of less than $16,000 for Singaporeans.

Under the degree programme, students will be taught to detect eye diseases and handle state-of-the-art medical equipment. After which, they will complete an internship at the NHG Eye Institute.

"A high quality and well-directed education is a necessary and long-term investment to produce a quality workforce," said RAdm (NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Senior Minister of State for Education.

"Singapore Polytechnic's collaboration with The University of Manchester is an example of such a programme with the needs of our population in mind," he added.

Mr Goh Kiat Wee, one of the applicants for the degree agreed.

"I can now have the chance to be skilled and realise my dreams to practice optometry clinically," said the happy 25-year-old.

Interested applicants can download the application form and information from www.sp.edu.sg.

Alternatively, queries can be directed to the Programme Manager Ms Belinda Ho at (belinda.ho@sp.edu.sg) or 6870 7879. The closing date for application is 28 November 2008.
