THE growing emphasis on getting your child a good head start in life has turned Singapore's pre-school industry into a thriving one.
According to the Modern Montessori International (MMI), the Singapore pre-school market at present encompasses more than 2,000 centres - childcare, kindergarten, enrichment among them - that cater to some 200,000 children per year.
Singapore's early childhood education providers like MMI, Learning Vision, Kinderland, Pat's Schoolhouse and Etonhouse are so popular that they have set up centres in Malaysia, Indonesia, India, China and Bangladesh.
Dr T. Chandroo of MMI says "there is an ever-increasing demand for quality early childhood education and the opportunities are limitless". As a result, local institutions are now offering diplomas in pre-school education.
The Straits Times reported that there are 24 Ministry of Education accredited schools that offer the Diploma in Pre-School Education in Teaching, of which 13 offer the Diploma in Pre-school Education in Leadership which trains people to run childhood centres.
MMI currently has about 1,000 international students in its Diploma in Montessori and English Language courses in Singapore.
