HE HAS lived, laughed and loved - and is now missed by hundreds of friends back home in Miami.
Mr Scott Monat, 21, an American exchange student at the National University of Singapore, died after experiencing breathing difficulties in his hostel room in Prince George's Park Residences (PGP) early on Wednesday morning.
The second-year neurobiology major from the University of Miami was the recipient of the Florida university's most prestigious merit award.
In less than a day, more than 470 people joined an online group, RIP Scott Monat, on social-networking site Facebook.
Ms Samara Piller, a Georgia Highlands College student who set up the group, told my paper that the two had known each other "since third grade" (United States equivalent of Primary 3) and were best friends.
Others, including childhood and family friends, gave touching tributes, remembering Mr Monat as a "hilarious", "smart" and "brilliant" young man.
PGP resident Pattie Vongsoasup, 20, who put up Facebook pictures of their recent trip to Bintan, said that a memorial service has been planned for tomorrow.
Over in Miami, more than 50 people attended a memorial service for Mr Monat at Hillel, a Jewish student centre on campus, yesterday morning Singapore time, media reports said.
The Singapore Internet community has also been abuzz in the light of Mr Monat's and student David Hartanto Widjaja's deaths this week.
