S'pore undergrad wins international prize in Dubai

ANOTHER Singaporean has won an international award over the last few days.

SMU undergrad Eunice Lim, 20, clinched the Best Presenter prize at the Education Without Borders 2009 Conference in Dubai last Wednesday.

Ms Lim, a second-year law student, won for her paper on Singapore's solution to the Water Crisis - NEWater technology.

She was the only Singaporean to win at the conference.

Education Without Borders is a biennial international student conference aimed at creating networks across cultures to understand and generate solutions for some of the world's greatest challenges.

In her paper titled Water Crisis - A Nation's Challenge, A Global Concern, A Regional Solution, Ms Lim introduced Singapore's NEWater technology to conference delegates.

Ms Lim said writing the 10-page, 4,800-word paper didn't feel like work at all.

She said: 'I have an interest in water sports, so I have a natural curiosity about water issues.

'Writing about NEWater was a natural progression for me.'

She explained how it is an innovative solution to the global water crisis and concluded with her recommendation that countries should cooperate at a regional level to tap into the benefits of this technology.

'I also feel that Singapore has made a mark in many technologies and I wanted to put Singapore's achievements on the world map,' she added. Over 3,600 papers on various themes were submitted for the conference.

The organisers then narrowed it down to a final 36 from top universities around the world, including Harvard University, Oxford University and Tsinghua University to be student presenters at the Conference.
