[Top: Emergency services at Parkway Holdings' Gleneagles Hospital]
IN AN industry first, Parkway College - a subsidiary of mainboard- listed Parkway Holdings - has received full accreditation from the Singapore Nursing Board (SNB) for its three-year diploma in nursing course.
It is the first such course offered by a home-grown private college.
The other institutions here offering SNB-accredited diplomas in nursing are Nanyang and Ngee Ann polytechnics, which produce around 1,000 graduates a year in total.
After receiving in-principle accreditation last year, Parkway enrolled 102 students for the first run of the course, which kicked off last November.
Then, after an on-site audit in February this year, SNB granted it full accreditation. Another 57 students have enrolled for the second run of the course, which began last month. They study at the college campus at Jalan Bukit Merah.
Parkway College differentiates itself from the courses offered at Singapore polytechnics through "collaborations with medical specialists from the Parkway Group of hospitals in some subjects to leverage on their medical expertise", said Ms Nellie Tang, chief executive officer of Parkway College.
Ms Lau Yu Jin, 35, whose course fees are fully sponsored by Parkway College and the Singapore Workforce Development Agency, said: "I used to be in the administrative line and I'm an animal lover. I realised that it is rewarding caring for others the way I care for animals. This is my true calling."
