KAJANG, MALAYSIA: A fire at SMK Jalan Bukit destroyed a two-storey block that housed the staff room, including the office equipment and recently marked exam papers.

However, nobody was hurt as it was still the school holidays.

Two of the school guards heard a noise at about 5am and called a friend over to investigate.

"We checked the noise coming from the school office and discovered keys sprawled over the floor outside. We then heard the sound of glass shattering from somewhere," said Samy Adaikan, 40.

Both the guards rushed to contact the police while Samy waited in the guardhouse. After a while, he said he saw smoke rising from one of the school buildings and ran to call the Fire and Rescue Department.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Shakaruddin Che Mood said the authorities received the distress call at around 7.30am.

"A fire engine from the Kajang fire department arrived shortly after and brought the fire under control," he said.

He said the fire department would take around a week to conclude investigations into the cause of the fire.
