Six promising officers from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) were at the Istana this evening to receive the Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Scholarship (SAFOS).

It is the most prestigious scholarship after the President's Scholarship.

The six SAFOS holders, who received their certificates of award and ceremonial swords from Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, are:

  • Officer Cadet (OCT) Chua Xianyi (Army)
  • OCT Lim Kah Liang Stanley (Army)
  • Second Lieutenant Mok Wei-Sheng Jerik (Army)
  • Midshipman Chua Sheng Hao (Navy)
  • OCT Lee Wen Jie Jamie (Airforce)
  • OCT Tay Weizhe Nicholas (Airforce)

All six scholars will pursue their university education in the United Kingdom or the United States.

Present at the award ceremony were senior officials from the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the SAF, Chairman and members of the Public Service Commission, in-service SAF overseas scholars, as well as the parents of the six SAFOS recipients.

About Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Scholarship (SAFOS)

The scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding servicemen who have excelled in their studies and co-curricular activities, and performed well in the officer cadet course. It was introduced in 1971.

When the scholars return to serve the armed forces after their tertiary education, they are assigned to a variety of appointments to groom them for the highest level of leadership positions in the SAF and MINDEF.
