Some 15,000 undergraduates in Kedah and Perlis will be given a laptop each, with unlimited broadband services by Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM). The Cool Uni Pax package was specifically designed for students of higher learning institutions, said TM Kedah/ Perlis general manager Pauziah Taib.
The package, which comes with pricing from as low as RM50 (S$20) a month for up to two years, will be given to first- and second-year students.
Pauziah said the idea behind the package was to offer something affordable to students who came from lower-income group.
"We want children whose parents are from the lower-income group to benefit from this package."
She said this, indirectly, would allow the students to embrace the world of information technology and this would help them in their studies.
Pauziah added that students who had received an offer to pursue their studies at any higher learning institution, could also apply for the package.
"The first package of 15,000 laptops to be given out by the end of April was based on a first-come-first-serve basis," she said.
She was speaking after handing over RM189,240 in tithes (zakat) to the chairman of Baitulmal Perlis, Datuk Abu Bakar Ahmad, witnessed by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu.
