Professor Barry Eichengreen has been named the inaugural professor for the MAS Term Professorship in Economics and Finance in the National University of Singapore (NUS).

The professorship was established in 2009 by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) at NUS to strengthen research in Economics and Finance and to enhance collaboration between academia, industry and the public sector.

Eichengreen is currently the George C. Pardee and Helen N. Pardee Professor of Economics and Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught since 1987.

His research interests are broad-ranging, including the history and operation of the international monetary and financial system, exchange rates and capital flows and Asian integration.

As part of his professorship, Eichengreen will interact with policymakers and MAS staff, and advise faculty and students of the NUS Department of Economics as well as the NUS Business School. Professor Eichengreen will also deliver a public lecture on "Asian Integration: the Way Forward".

Mr Ong Chong Tee, Deputy Managing Director, MAS, welcomed Professor Eichengree's appointment. "We are honoured to have Professor Eichengreen take up the inaugural Professorship. Given his vast experience and expertise on the history and evolution of the international financial system, Professor Eichengreen will have useful views and insights on the challenges facing the global economy and financial markets," said Mr Ong.

Professor Tan Eng Chye, NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost, said: "We are pleased to have Professor Eichengreen join NUS as the inaugural MAS Term Professor.

"A renowned economist with extensive scholarship on international monetary and financial systems, his appointment would contribute towards building up research capabilities and intellectual capacity in finance and economics at the University, as well as raise our profile as a centre for research and teaching in these fields."
