Fire rages through China office block

BEIJING - FIREMEN in remote northwest China on Thursday were battling a blaze that has raged for nearly 14 hours through a 12-storey shop and office building, state media said.

It was not known if there were any deaths or injuries, Xinhua news agency said.

Dehui International Plaza in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang autonomous region, was home to 2,000 workers selling clothes, cosmetics and toys up to the fourth floor. The fifth to 12th floors were used as offices.

The fire broke out at 8:20 pm on Wednesday, just before the market's 9 pm close.

'All the occupants in an adjacent 20-storey hotel were safely evacuated,' Xinhua said. -- REUTERS
