PUTRAJAYA: Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting is widely tipped to be acting Health Minister following the resignation of Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, well-placed sources said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is expected to sign Ong's letter of appointment today.

After the emergency MCA presidential council meeting on Wednesday, Ong had conveyed the party's decision on three names: Ong himself; MCA deputy president and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy; and MCA vice-president and Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn to the Prime Minister.

The sources told Bernama that Abdullah picked Ong to take on ministerial duties at the Health Ministry.

This is not the first time a minister acts for another portfolio when there is a vacancy.

When Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad had to step down as Federal Territories Minister, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil was made acting minister.

Ong was also appointed acting Transport Minister when Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik stepped down.
