KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA on Friday appointed the chief of the country's second-biggest political party as acting health minister, after his predecessor resigned following a sex tape scandal.

Mr Ong Ka Ting, president of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and also housing and local government minister, replaces Dr Chua Soi Lek, who quit on Wednesday after admitting he was the man in a widely circulated sex video.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced the appointment in a statement to state news agency Bernama.

The health minister's portfolio has been traditionally held by a candidate from MCA, part of the ruling coalition.

The scandal is the latest in a series of problems plaguing Datuk Seri Abdullah's government, which has been widely expected to call a snap election in the coming weeks. -- REUTERS
