China cracks down on sex in video, audio products

BEIJING - CHINA has launched a crackdown on sex in its video and audio products, state media said, marking the latest in a series of measures to tighten controls over the media.

The wide-ranging campaign will target 'vulgar' erotic content, including female nudity masquerading as 'body art", the Xinhua news agency reported late Saturday, citing the General Administration of Press and Publications.

Video and audio producers have until Jan 15 to stop producing and selling 'vulgar' products, and recalling items already on the market, Xinhua said. Violators are threatened with unspecified punishment.

The administration made the announcement after a three-month quality check of China's media market that uncovered several examples of 'coarsely made' products, according to the agency.

The new measures come on top of other recent moves signalling a toughening official attitude towards the media.

The government issued new rules last week stating that only state-controlled entities will have the right to operate websites that post audio-visual material.

Also, authorities banned 'Lost in Beijing", an award-winning film depicting the seedy side of the Chinese capital.

But while Chinese censors have kicked off numerous campaigns and issued countless rules over the years, implementation is often flawed.

For example, even though China has repeatedly issued bans against online pornographic content, it is still widely available to Chinese Internet users. -- AFP
