NEW DELHI, Jan 6, 2008 (AFP) - India's ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi was released from a New Delhi hospital on Sunday after a five-day stay for a chest infection, a hospital official said.

The 61-year-old Gandhi had 'fully recovered' from her illness, B.K. Roy, chairman of the board of the city's Sir Ganga Ram hospital, said in a statement.

"She is stable and has been advised to continue rest," Rao said.

The Italian-born Gandhi was plunged into the political limelight after her husband, former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi - a member of the family's third generation to hold political power - was killed by a suicide bomber in 1991.
