TOKYO - A 55-YEAR-OLD lone Japanese climber lost in the mountains for 12 days survived by eating snow, salt and cold pills, police and news reports said Saturday.

Masayuki Nakamura on Friday finally found his way to a ski resort on the Azuma mountain range, 250 kilometres north of Tokyo, a local police spokesman said.

He was sent to hospital, but 'his life is not threatened as he is only suffering from minor frostbite,' the spokesman said, adding that he would be discharged shortly.

Nakamura began climbing on Dec 30 on the snow-covered mountain range with a plan to return to a village on Jan 2, but he quickly got lost in a blizzard.

He survived by eating snow and drinking water from a stream, and eating salt and cold pills, news reports said.

He spent the 12 days trying to find a way back while sleeping in a tent at night as temperatures averaged below zero, a local meteorological official said.

Nakamura, who has 25 years of climbing experience, was quoted by local media saying: 'I thought that's it. I'm immature. I will never go mountain climbing again.' -- AFP
