JAKARTA - AT LEAST one policeman died and three others were seriously injured in a clash with soldiers in Indonesia, a police spokesman said on Saturday.

Rumours a soldier had been kidnapped by police provoked an attack on their headquarters in eastern Maluku province, national police spokesman Sisno Adiwinoto said.

The incident reportedly took place on Friday.

'One police officer died and three others were injured, we are now confirming reports that one of the injured policemen has also died,' said Adiwinoto on Elshinta radio.

Violence between soldiers and police is not uncommon in Indonesia, sparked sometimes by territorial disputes over illegal activities. Police split from the military's command in 1999.

The provincial heads of the police and armed forces have arrived at the scene, but refused to comment.

Adiwinoto said the police would take 'stern action' against those who committed such crimes. -- AFP
