Four rescued, seven missing as Indonesian boat sinks: official

JAKARTA - FOUR survivors of a sinking Indonesian boat were plucked from the ocean Friday as bad weather forced rescuers to halt a search for seven others, an official said.

Their fishing boat capsized in rough seas on Wednesday off the northern coast of Indonesia's main island of Java.

'They were found seven miles (11 kilometres) away from the search point fixed by the rescue team,' team head Ade Raharjo told reporters, adding that a group of fishermen had found the survivors.

Raharjo said more than 20 rescuers, including navy divers and police, were forced to call off the search for other survivors due to bad weather but they would resume when possible.

Wild weather this week had stopped hundreds of fishermen from sailing off Java, he said.

Earlier in the week, high waves struck coastlines across the country's eastern islands, claiming two lives and forcing hundreds to flee their homes. -- AFP
