BEIJING, CHINA - FIFTEEN people were killed and 25 injured in a highway accident in central China involving a truck, a bus and three cars, state media reported on Tuesday.

A bus ploughed into a petrol tanker, triggering an explosion that set on fire three stopped cars which had been involved in an earlier accident, according to Xinhua news agency.

No details were provided on the injuries of the 25 survivors.

The accident, which occurred on Monday evening in Hunan province, was the latest in a seemingly endless string of fatalities that plague China's chaotic highways and roads.

China's roads are regarded as among the most dangerous in the world with 89,000 people killed in traffic accidents in 2006 - about 245 fatalities a day - according to the most recent official figures. -- AFP
