Magnitude 7.6 quake hits Indonesia: USGS

WASHINGTON - A MAJOR earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on Wednesday and a local tsunami watch was in effect, the US Geological Survey said.

The tremor was centered about 319 km west-southwest of Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia, at a shallow depth 35 km, USGS said.

Japan's meteorological agency has issued a tsunami warning.
