SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - TWO cabinet nominees stepped down on Wednesday just two days after South Korea's new President Lee Myung Bak took office, the presidential office said.

Unification minister-designate Nam Joo Hong and Mr Lee's choice as environment minister Park Eun Kyung had quit, said presidential spokesman Lee Dong Kwan.

'The two nominees expressed their intention to resign this morning ... and President Lee decided to accept their resignation,' the spokesman said.

He urged parliament not to delay its approval of the prime minister and other cabinet nominees.

Mr Lee's liberal opponents, who have a majority in parliament which is holding cabinet confirmation hearings, criticised Mr Nam's hawkish stance on North Korea and said his family members held dual US and South Korean residence.

Suspicions of property speculation were raised in Mr Park's case. -- AFP
