SEOUL - NORTH Korea has denounced Taiwan's bid for UN membership, saying it would fuel tension in Northeast Asia, according to state media monitored here on Sunday.
The island plans two referendums on joining the United Nations at the same time as its March 22 presidential election. One referendum would for the first time seek membership under the name Taiwan.
China - a key ally and major aid doner to the impoverished North Korea - still regards the island as part of its territory awaiting reunification, and strongly opposes any UN bid.
'Such action of the Taiwan authorities is a grave one to strain the situation in the Taiwan Straits and in Northeast Asia,' a foreign ministry spokesman told the Korean Central News Agency late on Saturday.
The spokesman said Pyongyang would support Beijing's 'one China' policy, reiterating its opposition to 'Taiwan's bid to enter the UN in any form.' Taiwan, under its official name the Republic of China, lost its UN seat to the mainland in 1971 and is now recognised diplomatically by only 23 nations.
The island has made several moves to join international organisations such as the United Nations under its official name, but this is the first time it is also trying under the name 'Taiwan'. -- AFP
