George Town: The Penang Island Municipal Council has made an about-turn and decided not to tear down the guardhouses and gantries built illegally on state land in a posh neigbourhood here.

Its president, Datuk Zainal Rahim Seman, said yesterday the council had reversed its original decision to demolish the structures at Jalan Jesselton and Lengkok Jesselton in Jesselton Heights.

"We have met the state government and sought its advice.

"The state government decided to leave the structures untouched on condition that motorists are not prevented from entering and leaving the residential area."

He said the council would not tear down the structures near the posh bungalows as they did not obstruct traffic flow.

Zainal said the residents had explained that the guardhouses and gantries were for monitoring traffic flow in the area and to discourage break-ins.

It was reported that the residents had put up the structures to prevent motorists from the using roads in the Jesselton neighbourhood to avoid traffic congestion in Jalan Brook.
