FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Scarlett Keeling was found raped and murdered in the Indian resort state of Goa in February.
Based on an autopsy report, the police said she had died from drowning in shallow water after losing consciousness from consuming a cocktail of drugs.
But her mother Fiona MacKeown demanded another autopsy, which confirmed her suspicions of foul play, and the police launched a murder investigation.
Two men have been detained in connection with the murder.
The case, which damaged the reputation of the police in Goa, has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation, India's premier law enforcement agency that specialises in complex and serious cases.
The crime has also revealed the darker side of Goa, which attracts about 500,000 tourists a year, as a place notorious for its drug-fuelled beach-front raves and for its chaotic local government.
