New Indon central bank governor sworn in

JAKARTA - FORMER senior economic minister Budiono was sworn in Thursday as Indonesia's new central bank governor.

He replaces Burhanuddin Abdullah, who was detained by the anti-corruption watchdog just weeks before he finished his five-year term last week.

In April, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono proposed Mr Budiono to parliament as the government's sole candidate for Bank Indonesia governor after two other nominees had failed to pass the vetting process.

Mr Budiono is a former Bank Indonesia director and was also at one time the national development planning minister before serving as finance minister during the administration of former president Megawati Sukarnoputri.

In 2005 he was named by Mr Yudhoyono as the coordinating minister for economic affairs following a cabinet reshuffle.

Analysts have said the central bank is facing pressure to further hike interest rates to subdue inflation, which could hit double-digit levels due to the government's plan to hike prices of subsidised fuels. -- AFP
