SEOUL - SOUTH Korea's parliament approved legislation on Thursday that will force convicted sex offenders to wear electronic tracking devices for up to 10 years.
The original bill called on convicted sex offenders to wear an electronic tracking system for up to five years from September.
But lawmakers revised that, saying strong measures were needed to stop a rapid rise in sex crimes.
Authorities want the electronic surveillance devices to help keep track of sex offenders.
Experts say 83 per cent of convicted sex offenders recommit similar crimes.
The National Assembly also approved another bill to raise the minimum penalty for those who rape children aged under 13, from five to seven years in prison.
The justice ministry is currently working on legislation to sentence those who sexually assault and kill children to death or life in prison.
The initiative followed a case where two girls, aged nine and 11, were kidnapped, raped and murdered in December.
Their bodies were found cut up and buried several months later. -- AFP
