SETIU, MALAYSIA: Sixty-seven National Service trainees from the Barracuda camp here were rushed to the hospital for food poisoning yesterday -- barely a week after a similar case involving eight trainees.
Fourteen of the trainees were warded while the remaining received outpatient treatment at the Setiu hospital. Four canteen workers also had food poisoning.
The camp's physical trainer Mohd Kamarul Ghani said the trainees began complaining of stomach ache, nausea and vomitting around 1am yesterday.
They were referred to the camp's medical team before they were taken to the hospital about 7am.
The trainees who were undergoing a community service programme had taken food which was catered during their lunch break.
Mohd Kamarul, however, said the catered food was not from the camp's canteen which had been closed since May 23 after the eight trainees suffered from food poisoning.
In that earlier incident, four trainees were warded while the rest were given outpatient treatment. Nuraini Mohd, one of the trainees who had food poisoning yesterday, said the food was a bit rancid.
"The sambal chicken was sour and the rice was stale. But I was too hungry, so I continued eating," she said.
Parimaladevi Ganesan, from Puchong, said: "I felt something was wrong with the chicken after eating half of it. My stomach still hurts," she said.
