DENPASAR (Indonesia) - An alleged Indonesian gang leader could face the firing squad after prosecutors on the resort island of Bali on Tuesday charged him with illegal gun possession.

Police raided the home of 56-year-old I Made Sutama in February, uncovering around a dozen rifles, pistols and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, as well as knives and bullet-proof vests.

Prosecutor I Made Jaya Ardana told the Denpasar district court the state would seek the maximum penalty of death. Mr Sutama, who allegedly heads a gang in the Balinese capital, is also charged with illegal gambling, he said.

The court will reconvene on July 1 to hear Mr Sutama's defence. -- AFP
