HONG KONG - HONG Kong's commerce secretary has resigned for health reasons, a surprise move that is unlikely to greatly affect the city's economic and business policies.

Mr Frederick Ma, a familiar figure in local political circles, will hold a news conference on Wednesday, he said in a statement.

Mr Ma, Hong Kong's Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, said he had been diagnosed with cavernous hemangioma and venous angioma - blood vessel tumours in the brain.

Mr Ma first joined the government in 2002 as Secretary for Financial Services after working in key posts in the private sector including with J.P. Morgan Private Bank and Chase Manhattan.

Hong Kong's Chief Executive Donald Tsang said he would forward Mr Ma's resignation to the Central People's Government in Beijing for immediate consideration. -- REUTERS
