MANILA, PHILIPPINES - A 5.7-MAGNITUDE earthquake rattled the central Philippines on Friday, but no tsunami warning was issued, and there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, seismologists said.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 6.25 pm, was 66 kilometres east-southeast of the town of Legaspi, on the main Philippines island of Luzon, the USGS said.

It struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, the USGS said.

Philippine government seismologists put the magnitude of the quake at 5.8.

Residents of the Bicol peninsula, on the southernmost tip of Luzon, said they noticed objects rattling but no panic among the locals.

The archipelago nation, made up of more than 7,000 islands, sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. -- AFP
