JAKARTA (Reuters) - At least eight people were killed and more than 60 injured on Saturday when a passenger train collided with a stationary cargo train carrying coal in Indonesia's Lampung province, an official said.
The Limex Sriwijaya train packed with approximately 300 commuters slammed into the back of the other, derailing several carriages. The collision occurred at around 7:45 a.m. (4:45 a.m. EDT).
"Eight are confirmed dead, all adults, and more than 60 people injured have been taken to a local hospital," Zakaria, spokesman for train operator PT Kereta Api in Lampung province, said.
"We have evacuated the victims and now authorities are trying to move damaged carriages."
"The cause of the accident is under investigation. There are several factors including brake problem or the train got on the wrong track," he added.
Train crashes and other transport incidents are relatively frequent in Indonesia, where infrastructure has strained to keep pace with population and economic growth.
