BEIJING, CHINA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 hit the border between China and Myanmar early on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.

The tremor struck at 5.35 am 224 kilometres from the city of Dali in southwest China and 65 kilometres from Myitkyina in Myanmar, according to a statement on the USGS website.

The USGS said the depth of the quake was about eight kilometres.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, according to China's state-run Xinhua news agency.

A massive quake hit south-west China's Sichuan province bordering on Yunnan in May, leaving nearly 70,000 dead, with about 18,000 people still missing.
