6.5 quake hits Indonesia
Mon, Oct 20, 2008

JAKARTA - A 6.5-MAGNITUDE quake struck off Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Monday, the geophysics agency said.

There were no immediate reports of damage and officials said no tsunami warning had been issued.

Indonesia officials said the quake struck at sea at 11:54 am (12.54pm Singapore time), some 96 kilometres southwest of Tolitoli town in Central Sulawesi, at a depth of 110km.

The quake was felt in the towns of Gorontalo and Poso on Sulawesi, meteorologist Andi Rachmat told AFP, but there were no reports of damage.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

The archipelagic nation was hardest hit by the earthquake-triggered Asian tsunami in December 2004 which killed an estimated 168,000 people in Aceh Indonesia-quake. -- AFP
