TAIPEI - A TAIWANESE man has been arrested on suspicion of blackmailing former president Chen Shui-bian, his family and an opposition leader, police said on Tuesday.
The man, identified only by his family name Yu, had threatened to harm Mr Chen, his family and Tsai Ing-wen, chairwoman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), via postcards since Dec 2007, the Criminal Investigation Bureau said.
Police arrested Yu, 55, on Monday in his home in Taipei county after tests matched his handwriting to the postcards, the bureau said in a statement.
The arrest comes as Mr Chen said he had received information of a separate death threat on him relating to his attendance at a demonstration set for Saturday against growing ties with China.
The embattled ex-leader has vowed to join the rally organised by the DPP in Taipei despite a money laundering scandal implicating him and his family.
Mr Chen is already being investigated for allegedly embezzling 14.8 million Taiwan dollars (S$684,228) in special expenses while he was president. His wife is on trial in the same case. -- AFP
