Bali bombers lodge appeal

DENPASAR - LAWYERS for the three Islamist militants facing imminent execution for the 2002 Bali bombings lodged yet another appeal Monday to save them from the firing squad.

Lawyer Imam Asmara Hadi said the appeal in Bali's Denpasar district court rested on the bombers' claim they had not been properly informed of the rejection of their previous appeal.

'We have lodged an appeal because we haven't received a copy of the Supreme Court rejection of our previous appeal,' Mr Hadi said.

A Denpasar court official said the appeal had been received and passed to the Supreme Court, which must make any recommendation.

But a spokesman for the Attorney General's Office said the bombers had exhausted all legal options and there was no change to the execution plans.

'No more appeals can be accepted because the limit is only one,' he said, even though the bombers have had at least three appeals considered by the Indonesian courts.

Officials have said the bombers will be executed by firing squad in 'early November' for the attacks on the tourist island which killed 202 people, mostly foreigners. -- AFP
