Thai bloggers voice off on protest

As events in Thailand unfold, the country's vocal netizens have their own standoff on the Internet. Many agree that the PAD will find it hard to justify their take over of the airport, even calling them terrorists.

A Happy One says:

"Even if the goal were good, the act is inexcusable. Terrorism is still terrorism. There is not and cannot be any excuse for holding literally thousands of people hostage to achieve a political goal that is in itself wrong."

But PAD supporters are styling themselves as victims, and at least one commentator is criticising the PM for his "passive and ineffectual" style of governing.

In his blog, Mahwatthai says:

"The PAD supporters have been hit by no less than 20 grenade and bomb attacks resulting in 4 deaths and hundreds of injuries? Yet, those supporters of the attackers are now calling these victims terrorists"

The only thing they can agree on is that the current impasse cannot continue.

In Thai Talk, a blog by a Nation journalist, he says:

"The military, caught in its own dilemma, can't decide what role it should play at this crucial time when it is expected to be an honest broker.

"The PAD's decision to launch its "total war" to unseat Somchai was clearly a high-risk gamble. It's a make-or-break move that could backfire. But the protest leaders seem to have come to the conclusion that a drawn-out cat-and-mouse game would only weaken the PAD. A no-peace-no-war situation would only benefit the Thaksin camp."

One well known TV talk-show personality, Suthichai, also the group editor of the Nation Multimedia Group offers a possible solution in his blog entry:

"How can PAD justify its seizure of the country's main international airport that disrupted the lives of so many Thais and foreign passengers? It's a high-risk move that PAD would have to spend lots of time and energy to explain to the public in general.

"The military said there won't be a coup. But that doesn't mean the army could keep a "live-and-let-live" attitude when chaos reins and a paralysed government seems incapable of running the country.

"A PAD core leader, Suriyasaid Takasila, said last night that if Somchai quits as premier, PAD would consider calling off the six-month seizure of Government House. However, if Somchai insists on clinging to power, the chaotic situation in Bangkok will deteriorate. Clashes between the pro and anti-government factions will intensify.

"Tourism will be hard hit. People's morale will be badly hurt. And the country will plunge deeper into the political abyss.

"The only solution: PM Somchai stands down. PAD calls off its protest. A new, bipartisan coalition is set up to draw up a new constitution to pave the way for a new general election that will guarantee free, fair and transparent polls."
