PESHAWAR, INDIA - A suicide bomber killed at least seven people when he detonated his explosives-laden car near a police van in a northwestern Pakistani town Friday, police said.

The blast happened in Bannu, near the lawless tribal region where Pakistani troops are battling Al-Qaeda- and Taliban-linked militants, local police chief Mohammad Alam Shinwari told AFP.

"The bomber rammed his car into a police van and at least seven people were killed," he said, adding that casualties included both police and civilians.

Hospital officials said about 15 people had been admitted with injuries caused by the attack.

There have been nearly 1,500 people killed since July 2007 in attacks by militants across Pakistan, the country's worst spate of extremist violence.

Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt became a "safe haven" for countless extremists who fled Afghanistan after the US-led invasion toppled the hardline Taliban regime in autumn 2001.
