TOKYO - AN EXPLOSION went off at a regional bureau of Japan's public broadcaster NHK on Sunday but no one was hurt, police said.

A security guard reported the blast at 5.42pm (4.42pm Singapore time) at NHK's office in the southwestern city of Fukuoka, they said, adding the incident was being investigated.

'The guard found the entrance of the building was full of white smoke, but there is no damage to the building itself,' a local police spokesman said.

'There is a report that a plastic tank, often used to carry gasoline, was found near the site, but we don't know yet if it has anything to do with the blast,' he said.
