JAKARTA - As elections loom in Indonesia this year, there have been reports about political donations drying up as a result of the economic crisis.
Yesterday, police in Bakaheuni Seaport, South Lampung, said two candidates in the upcoming legislative elections had stooped to selling marijuana to raise money for their campaign.
The duo were arrested for carrying 12kg of marijuana on Sunday.
Head of seaport police detectives and crime unit Talen Hafiz said that during questioning, the two members of the Indonesian Youth Party said this was their first attempt at selling marijuana in Java - and that it was done to raise much-needed money for their campaign.
The suspects, Reza Fadila and Anshorullah, were carrying marijuana worth 26 million rupiah ($3,328).
However, First Inspector Talen said the police suspect the men have been involved in marijuana dealing for a long time.
The duo were on a bus set to cross the Sunda Strait from Bakaheuni Seaport to Merak Seaport in Banten when the police found the drugs in a package under their seats during routine checks.
