HONG KONG, CHINA - TWO people were killed and 11 injured on Sunday as shoppers stampeded during a sales promotion in south-western China, state news agency Xinhua quoted local authorities as saying.
The tragedy occurred in Chongqing's Fuling District after a promotion for a medicinal product drew throngs of people, Xinhua quoted a district spokesman as saying.
'One of the dead was a 67-year-old lady,' the spokesman told Xinhua. 'The 11 injured were being treated at Fuling Central Hospital. Two of them were severely injured.'
An investigation into the cause of the accident was under way, Xinhua reported.
This was the second fatal stampede in Chongqing since November 2007, when three people died and 31 were injured in a stampede triggered by a sales promotion at a Carrefour outlet, according to Xinhua. -- AFP
