TAIPEI, May 27, 2009 (AFP) - A 5.8-magnitude quake struck south of Taiwan Wednesday, the central weather bureau said, but there were no reports of casualties or damage.

The undersea tremor hit at 6:27am (2227 GMT Tuesday), 124 kilometres (77 miles) southwest of southern Kaohsiung city at a depth of 77.5 kilometres, the bureau said.

Taiwan, which lies near the junction of two tectonic plates, is regularly shaken by earthquakes. A 7.6-magnitude quake killed about 2,400 people in September 1999.
