JAKARTA - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will win a second term in the first round of elections in July, a poll showed on Thursday.

The Indonesian Survey Circle poll of 4,000 voters found that 63.1 percent of respondents backed the liberal ex-general and his running mate, former central bank chief Boediono.

Yudhoyono must win more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round to avoid a runoff in September.

"Yudhoyono has a big chance to win the presidential elections in a single round," researcher Arman Salam said.

Former president Megawati Sukarnoputri snared only 16.4 percent support, while outgoing Vice-President Jusuf Kalla had 5.9 percent.

The survey had a margin of error of 2.4 percent.

Indonesian Survey Circle has received financial backing from Yudhoyono's team in the past, but Salam said its latest poll was independent.

Yudhoyono's Democratic Party won 20.85 percent of ballots in April 9 legislative polls, nearly tripling its total from 2004 and becoming the strongest party in parliament.
